Tenancy law: How far in advance should I send my termination letter?

Do you wish to terminate your lease? Cancellation should be made by a written letter, preferably registered. We show you the deadlines that apply.

Fixed-term lease contract :

This will automatically end on the date agreed in the contract. A termination letter will not be necessary.

If the contract provides for early termination, the registered letter must be sent before the start of the notice period established by the parties.

Lease contract of indefinite duration :

The termination letter must be received by the lessor before the start of the notice period agreed in the lease contract. If there is lack of precision, the legal period of 3 months, or 6 months for commercial leases applies.
