How does the social security system work for foreign workers in the UAE?

How does the social security system work for foreign workers in the UAE?

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) does not have a formal social security system for foreign workers. However, employers are required to provide health insurance for their employees.

Foreign workers in the UAE can also benefit from certain social benefits, such as sick leave, maternity leave, and end-of-service indemnities, which are governed by the UAE labor law.

Foreign workers are recommended to take out complementary health insurance to cover medical expenses and health care outside of the health insurance provided by their employer.

Foreign workers can also take out life insurance and disability insurance from private insurers. The benefits and costs of these insurance policies may vary depending on the type of coverage.

It is important to note that foreign workers in the UAE are not eligible for social security benefits such as unemployment insurance, disability insurance, or retirement pension. Foreign workers must therefore plan their own savings and investments for their retirement.
